This tough, iconic project called THE GALLERY is the urban finale of one of the most striking building blocks on the Zuid. Flanked by the M HKA, the Hoopnatie and many galleries, this site exudes the maritime context of yesteryear and is part of Antwerp's growing top artistic heart!
As a hinge between the Waalse Kaai and Cockerillkaai, THE GALLERY presents itself as an architectural ribbon or triad of volumes that reconciles the diversity in scale of the attenuated Zuiderdokken and Scheldekaaien into one legible, hybrid composition.
Binst Architects' design is characterised by an intelligible, clear and optically appealing arrangement that architecturally connects past and present and where pared-down details and sustainable materials are central. THE GALLERY exudes the atmosphere of a brutalist, simple architecture that gradually exposes itself in a more glazed fashion!
With respect for the underlying heritage of the Zuiderpershuis, THE GALLERY rises above ground level towards the Scheldt as an artistic square and entrance.
A design that gives direction and meaning to the context, as a triptych to the city!
